Swad - Indian side dishes in minutes

Most Americans have little experience with Indian food, and in many cases it takes some getting used to.  The typical Indian household serves foods far different than what our palates are accustomed to. In fact, the vast majority of Indian Food is vegetarian or Vegan.

The dishes of India are characterized by the extensive use of spices, herbs, vegetables, and fruit.  Each family of Indian cuisine includes a wide assortment of dishes and cooking techniques. Indian cuisine also varies from region to region, reflecting the varied demographics of this ethnically-diverse subcontinent.

Hindu beliefs and culture have also played an influential role in the evolution of Indian cuisineHowever, cuisine across India also evolved as a result of its large-scale cultural interactions with the Mongols and Britain.
One way to get a taste of Indian food is to visit one of the many Indian restaurants in your area. This can be lots of fun, especially for the adventurous foodie. Another simple way to accomplish the same thing is to try ethnic cooking at home. You can prepare Indian food in your own kitchen in a matter of minutes, and for less than $1 per serving.

Brookhaven has an extensive assortment of Indian foods, which you have most likely seen from time to time while walking down our aisles. We would like to encourage you to give them a try; perhaps you might discover some interesting or exciting meal variations, or an entirely new taste experience.

We suggest that you start with something basic and simple to prepare that is very inexpensive, such as Swad ready-to-heat and eat Dal Makhani -- a dish similar in appearance and taste to our chili.  If you were to prepare this dish from scratch at home you would need:

  • Black gram (a type of lentil)
  • Tomatoes
  • Cream
  • Red kidney beans
  • Garlic
  • Onions
  • Split chick peas
  • Butter
  • Ginger
  • Salt
  • Corn flour
  • Plus 17 different spices

Finally, the cooking directions require that it be on the stove for at least nine hours in order to give all the flavors time to properly blend.

You can purchase Swad Dal Makhani mix in a microwaveable pouch, which can be found in the non-refrigerated Indian Foods section. This taste treat is ready to eat in just two minutes! The taste is very pleasant (with just a hint of fire).

A one serving portion contains 135 calories, (68 from fat), total fat 7.56 g, saturated fat 4.71 g and only 40 mg of cholesterol.  The dish, although loaded with spice, has very little sodium, 387 mg, and 11.6 g of carbohydrates. Each serving also offers 4.85 g of dietary fiber and only has 2.8 g of sugar.

Natural Coconut Water

There has been a lot of buzz recently about coconut water, and rightfully so. At Brookhaven Marketplace  we carry a number of natural coconut waters, including Vita Coconut Water in the 1 liter container and Cali Coco 100% Coconut Water.

Relatively new to the US market, coconut water is one of the healthiest drinks around. Coconut water products range from pure coconut water to flavored varieties to those with real pulp. Aside from its natural, sweet taste, this thirst-quenching drink is also popular because it has a large number of health benefits...

Rich in electrolytes - Coconut water has the five electrolytes that are already in our bodies: potassium, magnesium, phosphorous, sodium and calcium. All of these electrolytes help in certain functions of our body.

Being a natural health drink, coconut water does not contain any preservatives, fats, or   cholesterol. This makes it a good drink for everybody regardless of their condition. Coconut   water contains a considerable amount of potassium, about 295mg -- far more than any sports or   energy drinks, which contain only about 117mg of potassium.

Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is often caused by an electrolyte imbalance. Studies have   shown that drinking coconut water directly lowers blood pressure in 71% of people!

Low Sugar Content - High fructose corn syrup, and fructose in general, are responsible for the massive growth in obesity rates in the Western World. While coconut water does have some sugar content, it is nowhere near as substantial (or dangerous) as that of sodas, sports drinks, or even processed juices (like apple juice) that contain no fiber.  Coconut water contains about 5mg of natural sugars, whereas all the other drinks contain about 10-25mg of refined sugars.

Healthy Skin - We’re always concerned with the way we look, and soft, clear skin is one of the most visible characteristics of good health. Coconut water adds moisture to our skin. Many lotions and facial moisturizers have this in their formulas (which is great), but they also only work on the outside. Drinking coconut water hydrates your skin from the inside. Aside from this, coconut water also helps remove the excessive oil in the skin and in the scalp. Again, this is why so many conditioners and shampoos make use of coconut water.

Coconut water also has topical benefits for the skin. It can cure acne scars thanks to coconut   water’s cleansing and toning effects on the skin. Rinse your face with coconut water everyday   and see how it helps.

Weight Loss / Fat Loss  - Coconut water does contain sugar...And too much sugar promotes obesity, especially if eaten at the wrong times. However, coconut water is far healthier than the alternative sport drinks, sodas, and commercial fruit juices and juice boxes.

Coconut water contains fiber, which slows the absorption of the sugars. This is critical, since   other sugary drinks and some fruit juices do not contain fiber, and those fast-digesting sugars   lead to fast fat-storage.

Coconut water contains a high amount of water along with its electrolytes. As we all know, water   keeps our bodies hydrated. As a result, the metabolism rate in our bodies remains high. Due to   this fact, water is a big help in maintaining one’s health. This is also the same with coconut water.

Anise - The vegetable (not the herb). Also known as fennel.

If you’ve never tried fresh anise you are in for a pleasant surprise.  Anise is a vegetable that has a taste that is similar to licorice. Although it has the same name as the herb anise, it is a separate plant with different features and uses. It’s especially popular in France and Italy.

You can identify anise by its large, bulbous base and its feather-like stalks. Both the base and the feathers from the stalks can be used in cooking. Because of its unique taste, it is most commonly used in dishes where fish is a primary ingredient, as it complements that food group nicely.  You can safely store it in your home for up to one week as long as the anise remains unwashed and is kept in your refrigerator.

When you are ready to use the anise, remove the stalks from the bulb, wash the bulb under cold water, and use it as required in your recipe(s). You can also use the stalk's feathers as a seasoning by washing them then placing them directly into stews and soups. The bulb can also be added raw to salads; just slice and serve along with other greens.  Also, try adding chopped anise bulbs to stuffing, omelets, and casseroles, or boil or steam pieces of the bulb and serve it as a side dish.

Nutritional information
Anise contains no cholesterol or fat and is low in sodium. It also serves as a good source of the vitamins A and C, and of potassium. Additionally, 120 grams of anise, which is approximately 1/2 of an anise bulb, contains only 35 calories, making it a nutritious and low-cal vegetable alternative for those on a diet.

Anise has also been used in many countries as a holistic, medicinal product. Eating anise is said to be a good treatment for coughs, and may work as an aid in preventing gastric-intestinal bloating and flatulence. Some Italians serve raw anise after a meal to help promote digestion. Anise is also said to help those who suffer from anemia -- especially women -- and works to help alleviate kidney problems.

Just looking at the package of Cutie's Juice makes you want to try it! The colorful design and rounded, tangerine-like shape are truly appealing -- and the contents are even better! Cuties Juice is all natural with no preservatives, and it's also gluten free. Also, there’s no sugar added and each smoothie flavor contains 100% juice and offers 150% of the daily requirement for vitamin C.

Caution – Although no additional sugar is added, be sure to read the labels because the natural levels of sugar in these fruit drinks are rather high.

The following product reviews were written by Steve on www.drinkwhat.com, posted 10/06/2011

Cuties Juice - GoGo Green Tangerine Kiwi
There was a refreshing kiwi-orange aroma coming out from the cute little plastic bottle when I opened it, and it smelled similar to wheat grass. The color was light-greenish, and the texture was not unlike other smoothie beverages...The drink is a bit watery; very similar to Naked or Odwalla drinks.

The first sip tasted sour, fruity, and lightly sweet. After a couple more sips, the smoothie became predominantly sweet rather than sour. Also, it was easy and pleasant to drink. When your mouth processes the sip, you are greeted by the lightly sweet taste first and then the subtle, tart taste after you swallow. The kiwi flavor was recognizable and so was the tangerine. There was no aftertaste.

Cuties Juice Rockin’ Red Tangerine Strawberry
The aroma coming out from the bottle was refreshing; it very much smelled of lightly sweetened strawberry. There was a subtle tangerine scent that could be detected if I sniffed it long enough. The color of this smoothie looked close to very light brown; I was expecting it to be red, since the bottle label was red in color. As for the texture, it appeared to be a bit more watery than your normal smoothie.

The first sip tasted sour and fruity. There wasn’t any indication of what fruit was in the smoothie, but after a couple more sips I could recognize the subtle tangerine flavor. As I drank more, the strawberry flavor started to emerge and became more and more dominant. Also, the tart taste was slightly heavier than the sweet taste after a couple sips. There was no aftertaste for this Rockin’ Red.

Cuties Juice Island Cuties Tangerine Pineapple
Upon removing the cap, a pineapple aroma emerged along with a subtle tangerine scent; it was lightly sweet. The pineapple scent was pretty obvious. The color of this smoothie looked exactly like the flesh of a pineapple, and the texture was the same as in previous flavors. As for the taste, the first sip was good because I could detect the pineapple flavor (which was light and smooth) along with the well balanced sweet and tart tastes. The more subtle tangerine flavor emerged only when I swallowed.

After chugging down half of the 8fl oz, the pineapple flavor was easily the dominant flavor in the smoothie, followed by tangerine and a hint of banana. The smoothie was easy, smooth, and pleasant to drink. There was no aftertaste for this Island Cuties.

Cuties Juice Clementine Mandarin Juice
The aroma coming out from the bottle was pure, fresh tangerine. It looked just like your everyday orange juice in terms of the color and texture. As for the taste, the first sip was different than your normal orange juice because it had a subtle, unique taste to it that is hard to describe. The juice was smooth and pleasant to drink. It wasn’t particularly sour; what hint of it there was balanced well with the sweet taste. The tangerine taste was perfect and as fresh as you can get. There was no aftertaste for this tangerine juice drink.
